Registration deadline: July 11

Pre-event Volunteers

As a volunteer artist you can bring creative meaning, imagination and beauty to Luminara. Here are three ways you can volunteer as an artist:

Lantern Installation Artist

Work off site or at our Open Studio sessions, producing your own designs and creations to enhance Luminara's visual impact.
MUST BE AVAILIBLE THE DAY OF THE FESTIVAL. (Installation artists must register with Luminara by May 23.)

Artist Assistant
Assist the installation artists in the construction of their lantern designs. This is a supporting role for those who would like to learn more about lantern construction.

Production Artist
Drop in to the Open Studio sessions and help build, repair or decorate lanterns; accessorize costumes and take part in many other fun, creative activities.

Interactive Characters Roam the park in costume as a living, moving, breathing work of art. Experience is not required. Enthusiasm is! Through special Open Studio sessions, we will work with you to transform imagination into reality. MUST BE AVAILIBLE THE DAY OF THE FESTIVAL.
Feeling shy? We also need volunteers to assist with costume construction and headdress creation.

Workshop Volunteer For people who like working with the public and like working with kids, consider volunteering at the workshops in Mayfair Shopping Center. Workshops are an opportunity for people to learn about Luminara in a hands-on fashion. Volunteers need to be trustworthy, good with the public, knowledgeable about Luminara, and good at doing crafts and helping others be creative.

General Volunteer This is for people who 'just want to help'... putting up posters, helping out in the office or studio, finding materials, scrounging for cool junk, moving stuff on and off of trucks, fixing broken lanterns, cleaning up at Open Studio sessions... who knows what might come up!?

Event Day Volunteers

Set-up Crew These volunteers make magic on the day of the event. Starting first thing in the morning, all the wonderful things that have been created are distributed to their rightful spot in the park, hung, fastened, spiked, etc. This is for volunteers who have good decorating sense (you know what looks good), common sense and tons of energy. You must be able-bodied for this job.. there are things to carry, ladders to climb and lots and lots and lots of walking. (NOTE: If you are an "Installation Artist" volunteer you are expected to set-up your own display, but are not considered 'a set-up volunteer', as you will be too busy with your own stuff to do anything else.)

Glow sales & Donation Crew These front-line people are friendly, approachable, outgoing and adept at handling cash. These positions are vital in the financial well-being of the festival.

Info Tent The Info Tents at St. Ann's and Beacon Hill Park provide maps, programs, and information about Luminara and ICA to the public. This position requires a good knowledge of Luminara and ICA, enthusiasm and problem-solving skills.

Site Host This volunteer position has to do primarily with helping the public who attend Luminara. You should be friendly, committed, outgoing and responsible. You will be asked a million questions, which you should know the answer to. You will provide 'low-level' security, keeping an eye on the public and making sure they are not doing something they should not, and are able to see and do all the things they would like to. Attendance at orientation sessions is MANDATORY for this position. You need to know your way around in the park in the dark and help others to find their way too.

Fire Safety These volunteers roam the site and make sure that we have a safe and enjoyable event. Set up of Fire Safety stations and some training with fire safety equipment are part of this volunteer position. A good fire crew is a bored fire crew.

Light-Up Crew This is usually split into two teams: those who offer the public a 'service' carrying torchieres and extra candles to help the public with their lanterns; and those who dash through the park, getting all the lantern installations ready and making sure they stay lit throughout the night. Both are fun, fast paced jobs, and require some orientation prior to the event.

Traffic During the first part of the day Beacon Hill Park is open to traffic. Our traffic people help us make the transition between cars and no cars, the supervise the barricades, show people where they can go (nicely!) and help out with parking. These volunteers should be patient, good communicators and good with the public.

Strike Crew See everything that gets done under set-up? It all has to be UN-done the same night. In the dark. After everyone else has gone home with pretty lanterns lighting up their dreams. So, how's your stamina?? Seriously, this is ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT JOBS in this event. We pride ourselves on leaving the park exactly how we found it or better, and that is why we are able to continue holding Luminara in BHP. This crew gets tons of satisfaction from the great job they do by the light of the moon (and a flashlight).
